Dental Sedation Helps Provide Comfortable Care

celina sedation

Do you have a fear of seeing the dentist? Do other factors make undergoing care a complicated process for you or a member of your family? If so, we understand and we want to help! In today’s blog, your Celina, TX, dentist explains how dental sedation can ensure a comfortable visit for all our patients!

Choosing the Right Selection for You

We recommend this calming solution for people undergoing more extensive treatments, such as wisdom tooth extraction or dental implant placement. But they can also be helpful for people with serious dental anxiety or special needs that make undergoing even minor procedures like a dental cleaning a difficult process.

How do we choose which of our calming options is best for our patients? We look at a number of different factors, including their age, weight, and overall medical history. We take medications you are currently taking into account, and also assess your anxiety levels too. With this information, we can choose which sedation is best!

Three Calming Solutions

The most common (and most mild) option is nitrous oxide, which is helpful for kids and adults alike. We administer this through a mask over the nose. Patients breathe in a special gas mixture and enter a deep state of can, with a euphoric feeling and little to no memory of the process. They can respond to the dentist as needed, and the effects can be adjusted during treatment and even wear off once the procedure ends. People can even return to work or drive themselves home.

For a deeper state of calm, we could offer sedation in the form of a pill or liquid with oral conscious sedation. Taken before the procedure begins, this helps patients enter a deeper state of calm. They are still conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed, but have no memory of the process. The effects take time to wear off, so be sure someone is ready to take you home afterward.

The deepest form of calming is IV, administered intravenously. A trained anesthesiologist will monitor you the entire time, and you will enter a deep and sleep-like state with no memory of the process. You will be a bit groggy when the procedure ends, and will need a ride home. For both IV and oral conscious, we suggest fasting beforehand, and the procedure will likely take place in the morning.
