How To Keep Your Teeth And Gums Healthy

celina general dentistry

We want to offer tips to help you and your family enjoy good oral health, avoiding concerns like tooth decay and even gum disease. With better oral hygiene habits at home and regular visits for checkups and cleanings, you can safeguard both your teeth and gums. In today’s blog, Celina Family Dentistry talks about how to better protect your teeth and gums with general dentistry.

Brushing and Flossing

You should brush and floss your teeth daily to help improve your oral health! To adequately protect your smile, you should start and end your day by brushing for two minutes. You can use an electric or manual toothbrush, whichever you prefer, but be sure you use one with soft bristles to avoid inadvertent enamel damage or gum irritation. The toothpaste you choose matters, we suggest one with fluoride to help keep outer enamel strong and cavity-free.

Flossing is also essential for avoiding bad breath, gingivitis, and gum disease. You should floss every evening before you brush that second time, and do so with a floss pick, string, tape, or a water flosser, whichever you prefer, as long as you are cleaning thoroughly between the teeth.

Watching What You Eat

What we choose for our snacks and meals will impact our smiles significantly. When we add lots of options with sugar and starch, this leaves behind particles that cling to the teeth and will be broken down by bacteria, which creates the plaque and tartar buildup connected to bad breath, stained teeth, cavities, and even periodontal issues. Instead, add more fresh fruits and veggies, whole grain items, and options with lots of vitamin C and D.

You should also drink lots of water, as this helps rinse your mouth when you do, and try to avoid beverages high in sugar and acids, such as sodas, energy drinks, and sports drinks. Even fruit juice could leave behind lots of sugar! If you do enjoy one of these, be sure you follow it with a drink of water.

Seeing Your Team for Checkups and Cleanings

Homecare is crucial, but you also need to see us for a checkup and cleaning every six months, so we can keep an eye on your smile and also remove the layers that harm your teeth and gum completely with a cleaning. If you have any questions about keeping your teeth and gums healthy at home and with help from our team, then contact our office today.
