We’ve had a few rain showers lately in North Texas, but storm season is just beginning. Even if you’re stuck inside on a rainy day, Dr. Newton wants you to keep a healthy smile on your face. Next time it pours, try to entertain yourself with these fun uses for your old dental products.
Clean Your Clothes
You may think laundry is a boring task, but not with your dental hygiene products! Remember to only use an old toothbrush for cleaning around the house—not the current one you use to clean your teeth.
- Spot Remover: Toothpaste and toothbrushes help remove surface stains from your teeth, but they can also remove stains from other surfaces. Use an old toothbrush and a dab of toothpaste to help scrub stains out of fabric or rub mud off shoes.
- Fresh Laundry: Adding a cup of mouthwash to your laundry load can help destroy the bacteria in your wash. When you’re done washing your clothes, hang them up to dry using a piece of dental floss as a temporary clothesline.
- Shiny Jewelry: Don’t forget your accessories! Gently scrub your jewelry with a toothbrush and abrasive toothpaste to help polish your jewels.
Improve Your Image
The warmer springtime weather means you may be spending more time outside. Try using your rainy days to clear up your skin.
- Wound Disinfectant: If you fell on the ground during your outdoor activities, mouthwash acts as an antiseptic to help disinfect cuts, scrapes, piercings, and wounds. It can also help reduce the appearance of bruises and dry out blisters to promote faster healing.
- Soothing Relief: If you’re growing a spring garden, mouthwash and toothpaste can help dry out and soothe bug bites, poison ivy, and bee stings.
- Smooth Skin: Toothpaste can help absorb oil to dry out greasy skin and reduce the redness from pimples. Furthermore, an alcohol-free mouthwash can keep your pores clean, and a soft toothbrush can help remove dry skin.
Arts and Crafts
Use your time indoors to develop a new hobby or craft.
- Homemade Jewelry: Boiling an old toothbrush handle will make it soft and flexible. Try bending the handle into fun shapes to wear around your neck or wrist. You can also use dental floss to string beads and create your own jewelry.
- Painting: Frayed toothbrush bristles can make abstract paint splatters. Add to your piece of art by creating fun streaks and lines with dental floss.
- Oral Games: Try challenging your sibling to some contests involving your mouth. For example, see if you’re one of the 85 percent of the population who can curl their tongue, or pass the time practicing tongue twisters.
The best use for your dental products is to clean your mouth, but it’s fun to recycle old hygiene products to use for entertainment on rainy days. And remember, don’t let rainy weather prevent you from getting to Dr. Newton’s dental office. If the weather is severe, we will follow a rescheduling policy.
