With children’s dentistry, we not only offer checkups and cleanings for kids, but treatments designed to help protect them from cavities. With our preventive treatments, we can help strengthen enamel and lower the risk of tooth decay. In today’s blog, your Celina, TX, dentist talks about preventing cavities with dental sealants and fluoride treatments.
Starting with an Exam and Cleaning
We begin with a simple dental exam, which children over the age of two should have every six months. During the visit, our team will examine the smile with advanced digital imaging technology. We can then conduct a diagnosis with precision and identify issues that need attention, such as a cavity. We can also assess the risk of developing decay, so we can decide if your child needs preventive care to protect their smile from cavities. In the same visit, we will also clean the teeth to remove the plaque and tartar that can weaken enamel and make cavities possible!
Fluoride
To strengthen the outer layer of tooth enamel and lower the risk of tooth decay, our team could offer fluoride treatments as part of the dental checkup visit. Our team will apply fluoride to the teeth in a varnish form, which takes a few seconds. Kids then need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour as the material cures properly. The fluoride helps strengthen enamel, even weakened portions, to lower the risk of tooth decay. For this reason, we also recommend kids under the age of three use a rice sized bit of fluoride toothpaste when they brush, and kids over the age of three use a pea sized blot.
Dental Sealants
Often, tooth decay forms in the molars as kids have trouble reaching these rear molars when they brush and floss. But with dental sealants we can add a special acrylic layer to these teeth so that food and drink particles can no longer be trapped there, which lowers the risk of cavities significantly. Applying it only takes a few seconds and again, kids just need to avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes as the acrylic layer cures. This can stay in place for up to ten years and protect smiles!
