When you have crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth, then you need treatment to correct the uneven teeth and improve the health, function, and beauty of your smile. We can offer orthodontics like braces or even invisible ClearCorrect® aligners. In today’s blog, your Celina, TX, dentist talks about our orthodontic treatments.
The Causes of Misalignment
How do our teeth become so misaligned? This could happen in childhood due to the premature loss of baby teeth, or their inability to fall out on time, as both factors upset how the permanent teeth arrive. Thumb sucking in childhood is also a factor. As we reach our teen and adult years, tooth loss and the arrival of the wisdom teeth could lead to uneven smiles. For others, the shape and growth of the jaw and certain oral structures could impact how teeth erupt. We will carefully examine your smile to assess the factors behind your uneven smile and choose the right orthodontic solution!
The Dangers to Your Smile
Without treatment, misalignment not only changes the beauty of your smile, but can also have negative impacts on overall oral health as well. For example, thorough brushing and flossing could be difficult, leaving food and drink particles trapped between teeth and increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. For others, the stress on the jaw joints from uneven teeth could mean an increased risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). Instead of feeling embarrassed and letting your overall oral health and bite function suffer, why not seek treatment to correct your uneven smile with our orthodontics?
Planning Treatment
To begin, our team will conduct a detailed examination of your smile with digital x-rays and intraoral cameras, so we can assess the cause and severity of your misalignment, and address any underlying oral health concerns we discover. We will select the most appropriate treatment option, and talk to you about your options in detail, so you know what to expect and how to care for your smile during treatment. For teens and adults, we offer two different orthodontic solutions: braces and clear aligners.
Braces
Metal braces can tackle more severe cases of misalignment in teen and adult smiles. The process involves connecting a metal bracket to the front of your teeth, and then connecting a portion of an arch wire to each bracket with a band. We may also connect the upper and lower set of braces with bands as well. When you come into the office for periodic treatments, we will adjust tension in the arch wire to begin shifting the teeth it proper positions. This can take up to two years, as the bone and gum tissues need to reform around the new positions of your teeth to hold them in place. You may need to wear a retainer at night afterward to prevent them from shifting back.
ClearCorrect® Aligners
For more minor cases of alignment, we could take a very different approach. Our team will gather detailed digital images and measurements of your smile to design and craft a series of aligners from a clear and BPA-free plastic material. Each set is worn for two weeks, 20 to 23 hours a day, and each one gradually shifts your teeth closer and closer to their optimal positions. For some, this could take as little as one year. The aligners are easy to use and clean, and can be removed before you eat or prior to brushing and flossing too, so your daily life is much simpler in regards to your orthodontics.
Masking Minor Misalignment with Veneers
If you have very minor misalignment, then we could talk about treatment with porcelain veneers, which are placed onto the front facing side of the teeth and can instantly change the appearance of your alignment. You enjoy straighter looking teeth, and these veneers also mask issues like discomfort or misshapen structures too. If you have any questions about how our team will treat your uneven smile, whether that means metal braces or clear aligners, or even porcelain veneers, then contact our team today. Orthodontics can help you enjoy better bite function, a healthier smile, and of course, a more attractive appearance.
