A dental exam is vital for the health of smiles of all ages, from toddlers and kids to adults and seniors, so we urge you to receive one every six months! Now is a great time to undergo one, so you can start summer with better oral health. In today’s blog, your Celina, TX, dentist talks about our checkups and screenings.
The Dental Exam
The dental exam is recommended every six months for patients of all ages, starting at age two. The exam is a chance for our team to look at your teeth and gums for signs of common concerns, such as tooth decay, infection, gingivitis, and even gum disease. For adults, we also look for indicators of common issues like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). For kids, we want to make sure baby teeth arrive and fall out on schedule, and that permanent teeth can arrive properly. Children also become accustomed to the dentist, so they’re less likely to have dental anxiety as adults, and will gain a better understanding of their oral health and the importance of routine visits. In the same visit, we also clean the smiles of our patients, removing the harmful layers of plaque and tartar to lower the risk of cavities, infections, and even periodontal concerns too.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Our team also offers oral cancer screenings for adults too! According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, at least 53,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year alone, and of that number half will succumb to the disease. This is because the issue is rarely diagnosed in the early stages, but a screening can help you! The sooner we diagnose the presence of cancerous or precancerous areas, the sooner you can receive a biopsy and start treatment, increasing your likelihood of a full recovery.
Care Between Visits
We can also discuss proper care at home in between these visits, so you limit the severity of buildup and lower your risk of cavities and gum disease. People of all ages need to brush their teeth in the morning and again at night, and we urge people to use a fluoride toothpaste too. We want to strengthen your enamel while you clean your teeth! Every evening before you brush that second time, we recommend flossing too, removing what is trapped between teeth and beyond the reach of a toothbrush. Cutting back on sugar and sugar in your diet is helpful, as is avoiding tobacco products.
